The Juhu Vile Parle Development Scheme :

When we formed our first Trust there was hardly any land available to establish any institution in Vile Parle. As a result all the major institutions were established in what is now known as the J.V.P.D. Scheme. The major investment of our Trust funds has taken place in this area. Hence it is necessary to briefly see the historical development of J.V.P.D. Scheme while describing the Trust activities.

A very ambitious Cooperative Housing Project started in late fifties. It involved reclaiming and development of about 21,00,000 sq. yds. of marshy land. The foresight of the founder members of this movement played a very important role in allotting more than 50% of the gross reclaimed area for common utilities and amenities, with specific areas earmarked and reserved for education, medicare, playground, shops, parks, cultural activities, etc. Thanks to this vision, more than 30 institutions, doing work in these spheres, blossomed in the area. The Cooperative Societies provided the land earmarked for the specific purpose, and the organizations generated the finance. Compared to the land value, the finance that these organizations had to generate for construction, establishment and managing of the institutions was almost phenomenal.

Flourishing of these institutions has contributed, in no small measure, to the prestige of the J.V.P.D. Scheme. It is the presence of this Educational Complex of schools, and colleges, and various academics that has made the J.V.P.D. Scheme an ideal Residential Complex.
The experience of this cooperative movement goes to prove that if we are not guided by short term commercial gains, and keep in mind the larger interest of the development of community, in the long run, the community stands to gain even commercially. This visionary planning and development of J.V.P.D. Scheme has as a matter of fact provided a concrete example worth emulating by others.
